Kodak (owner of the Scitex Graphic Arts)- in Chapter 11

On January 19, 2012,

Eastman Kodak Company and its U.S. subsidiaries filed voluntary petitions for Chapter 11 business reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

The business reorganization will enable Kodak to bolster liquidity in the U.S. and abroad, monetize non-strategic intellectual property, fairly resolve legacy liabilities, and enable the Company to focus on its most valuable business lines.

Our ExScite Dominic Duffy requested to post this at ExScite:

"[ I'd like to ask] the Excite community in preparation for a talk I'm giving at a University toward the end of the month.
My talk is to budding software developers and is about the importance of thoroughly researching a potential market above creating a great product.
I want to draw – affectionately – upon my time at Scitex and use the example of a fantastic, highly dynamic company bursting with brilliant engineers but falling foul of making a product that was so clever but so inherently expensive, that it eliminated its own market.
The [Scitex] Lotem was truly brilliant but ultimately proved the last stride for Scitex which as we know, was bought by a company that made its fortune primarily through selling a much simpler, far less intelligent rival product.
I'd like to find out from any ex-Scitex people who were directly involved in the development of the Lotem and particularly about any market research that was conducted at the time.
I reckon it would make a very interesting study.

Scitex "Smart Terminal"- the first R-800 prototype user terminal.
The R-800 system was designed for imaging of the data-intensive geophysics research, and was in fact a Pixet platform, with HP-150 mini-computer in the back.
This brochure says:
".....this HP-150 personal(?) computer [is] used instead of alphanumeric terminal to control the Scitex host processor....the smart terminal has touch sensitive screen [well in fact, what they wanted to say- a mouse on a tablet in the table]. Certain major system options are presented on the screen as menu...."
Oh, those were the days (early 1980's).

The flyer was sent to us by Eldad Weiss. (Click on the image to see a full size flyer).
